Simple Refrigerator Maintenance to Avoid Costly Breakdowns

Share

Your refrigerator runs 24/7, so small problems can quickly become big ones. A few minutes of maintenance each season keeps it efficient and extends its life.

1. Clean the Door Seals

Dirty or cracked gaskets let cold air escape, making the compressor work harder. Wipe the seals with warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly. If you see tears, gaps, or the door does not close firmly, the gasket likely needs replacement.

2. Vacuum the Condenser Coils

Dusty coils are one of the most common causes of poor cooling. Unplug the fridge, pull it gently away from the wall, and use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust from the coils (on the back or underneath, depending on the model).

3. Set the Right Temperatures

The fresh food section should be around 37–40°F (3–4°C) and the freezer around 0°F (-18°C). Colder is not always better—too cold can freeze produce and waste energy.

4. Check for Proper Airflow Inside

Do not pack food tightly against the back wall or vents. Your fridge needs space for air to circulate evenly. If one area is always warmer or colder, rearrange items to keep vents clear.

5. Level the Refrigerator

A fridge that is not level can cause doors not to close fully and may lead to noisy operation. Use a small level and adjust the front feet until the doors close on their own when left slightly open.

6. Replace the Water Filter

If your refrigerator has an ice or water dispenser, replace the filter as recommended (often every 6 months). Old filters can restrict flow and affect ice quality and taste.

When to Call a Professional

  • Food is spoiling quickly even after basic checks
  • Freezer works but the fresh food section is warm
  • You hear loud clicking, buzzing, or grinding noises
  • Water is pooling inside or under the fridge

Fast attention can save your food and protect the compressor, which is one of the most expensive parts to replace.
